About Kent State University

Kent State University, also known as Kent State, Kent or simply KSU, is a public research university located in Kent, which is the largest city in Portage County, in the US state of Ohio, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 28 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, being counted as part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area and the larger Cleveland-Akron-Elyria Combined Statistical Area.


KSU first started as a teacher training school, under the name of Kent Normal School, being established in 1910, achieving its university status is May, 1935, when Governor Martin L. Davey, a native of Kent, signed a bill which allowed Kent State, along with Bowling Green, to add schools of business administration and graduate programs, giving them each university status.


Since its founding, the university significantly grew, having today a total enrollment of nearly 39 000 students, fact which makes it he third-largest university in Ohio, offering more than 300 majors, including 250 baccalaureate, 40 associate, 50 masters, and 23 doctoral degrees, in areas of study such as nursing, aeronautics, liquid crystals, library science, fashion design, business and history.


Kent State's athletic teams are known as the Kent State Golden Flashes, who compete in the NCAA's Division I (Bowl Subdivision for football), and the Mid-American Conference East division, in 16 men's and women's varsity sports, which include basketball, baseball, cross country, rugby, softball and ice hockey. The Golden Flashers have experienced victory in many of their sports, over the years, earning the Mid-American Conference's Reese Cup for best men's athletic program in 2000, 2002 and 2006, including the Jacoby Cup for best women's athletic program in 1989, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2004 and 2005.


Kent has approximately 196 000 alumni, living worldwide, among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, being: Michael Capellas - CEO of First Data Corporation; former President/CEO of Hewlett-Packard, WorldCom, Compaq, and Serena Software, Sarah Deal - first female Marine selected for Naval aviation training; first female aviator in the Marine Corps, Ray Wise - film and television actor in Twin Peaks and RoboCop, and Arnulfo Trejo - founder of REFORMA, an organization to promote library services to Latinos and Spanish-speaking individuals in the United States, among others.
